This family History project seeks to map the descendants of both Geoffrey Turnbull's paternal and maternal ancestors who migrated to Australia in the 1800's.
The information has been collected over the last 50 years from Aunts and Uncles (now deceased) who tried to fill in the various branches before the connections are forgotten with the passing of another generation. As a result much of the information is in outline showing the relationships but not the dates and places. Like all oral history it may contain some inaccuracies and no guarantees can be given that all the information contained is without error.
The Ancestors migrating to Australia given below were the closest ancestor to be born overseas. In some cases their parent and or other siblings also migrated to Australia.
TURNBULL Alexander [b unknown draper believed from London]
CALLAGHAN Bridget Anne [b Ireland Abt 1820]
MCKINNON Donald [b Gresibole Island of Coll Argyl Scotland 1822]
FLETCHER Flora [b Isle of Mull Scotland Abt 1829]
EVANS Richard [b Wybunbury Cheshire England 1787]
PEAKE Jane [b Stone Staffordshire England 1790]
COLES Catherine [b London England Abt 1809]
SANDERS (SAUNDERS) Thomas [b Henfield England 1829]
COLES Sara Emma [b England ?]
MEDWELL John [b Sinerlinshire / Stamford England 1813]
COUTTS Annie [b Dunfernline Scotland 1833]
MASON Thomas [b London England / Gravesend Kent Abt 1833]
GARDENER Maria [B Norfolk England Abt 1833]
MOORE James [b Carngat Fermanagh Ireland 1839]
HAMILTON Rebecca [b Drummanail Donegall Ireland Abt 1939]
In early 2005 the database contained over 4000 people including some relatives that did not migrate to Australia or New Zealand. The descendants are now however so wide spread that it is not possible to obtain information on all the additions to the various branches. The data collected will however allow various parts of the family to hopefully be able to link their families with other families where the connections have been lost.Â
Please contact me at geoff at turnbulls-au.com if you have or require further information.
There are still some significant holes including details about Alexander Turnbull & Bridget Callaghan's life other than the 10 years following their marriage through the birth and death of their children. No arrival record can be found for Alexander Turnbull and he disappears from the Victorian goldfields in the 1850's. The details of Richard Evans second family are also not complete.
It is hoped that this site will allow different branches of the family to discover their connections to other parts of the family. The Aunts and Uncles who contributed much of the information in the data base held the information of their relationships with others - this database seeks to continue the same task.
I would be happy to hear from anyone who can link their family tree to one of the above migrants as well as from anyone who shares some of the same ancestors.
For those on Ancestry.com there is an up to date tree on that platform.
Some public information, that is not able to be updated, on the trees can still be found at www.genealogy.com/ftm/t/u/r/Geoffrey-J-Turnbull/index.html
